Ford Escape by strawmancomics
Ford Escape
This was mostly colored with watercolors. I scanned in both the black and white before I started coloring and the colored painting. Rowlf did not turn out ok in the painting so I had to digitally color him.

I'm on a roll on these video game cover reproductions. I'm proud of how this turned out. I was hesitant to add the lettering and the graphic design elements to the final drawing but I think it worked out well. Created with India Ink, Copic Markers, and colored inks.

Battle Star Galacticus by strawmancomics
Battle Star Galacticus
A tribute to Star Trek for this weeks "Line It is Drawn". When I think of Galactus I think of size. I this guy is huge. When I think of the Enterprise I realize it houses many people. So put two big things together and then have one of those things hold the other. Hopefully it conveys the massiveness of the object.

So when this was suggested as a topic I immediately thought of Galactus holding the Enterprise between his fingers. It seemed like it would be a good idea for a memorable visual.

This time I tried two different stylistic things. This was done mostly with a pencil with some photoshopping of the Enterprise on top of my drawing of the Enterprise. It wasn't really working in the coloring phase so I needed a work around. I manipulated a photo so that it had the same proportions and angles as my original drawing. I thought if I did the drawing just in pencil that I could add a lot of pencil marks to convey texture. I think it worked mostly around Galactus face. I also changed my signature. I've going with the standard "David" for years but it occurred to me that if someone really liked my art and wanted more of it I should leave more than my first name as an identifier.

Mega Sentinel by strawmancomics
Mega Sentinel
Essentially a Megatron and Sentinel mash up, the topic for this weeks "Line It is Drawn" was a children of two characters. I thought the Sentinel offspring would inherit Megatron's nasty temper.

It's my great privilege to be accepted into CBR's "The Line it is Drawn". Every week I get to draw a new piece based on the suggestions of fans.

It was a very weird experience joining the group. The night before Brian Cronin posted an open call for "The Line" I thought to myself, "How does one join the Line is Drawn?" When I saw that they were taking applications I figured it might not hurt to ask about my work. After sending Brian a link to my DeviantArt page I got an encouraging email from Brian suggesting that I go ahead and create a new piece to apply for position.

So I came up with the Conan meets Heman illustration and sent it along. I was having a busy month and I wasn't even sure if it would be worth the time to create the artwork. I thought at the very least there would be some resell value in it if I wasn't accepted. Knowing the quality of the artwork produced I imagined the competition would be fierce. To my shock and surprise I received the following message "Hey David, Welcome, you got picked!" two days before Christmas. It was a real gift and it was an amazing high being accepted as professional peer for the first time in my life.

Every week is a challenge. It's a blast seeing the new artwork created by the "Liners" every Friday morning. It's like Christmas every week! They encourage me to produce the best work I can possibly create and that is a good thing!

Thanks a lot, man. The initial response kinda bummed me out.

Great work this week btw. It really cracked one of my friends up when he saw it...though he initially thought it was a Dune reference. The guy doesn't know comics that well.

 Take care.

well I mean "Spice" could lend itself to a DUNE reference.
